Share your story to help shame·less
As the inaugural project of our international consortium to advance awareness of shame in healthcare, this event will center on stories submitted by medical students at Duke University, University of Exeter, and Duke-National University of Singapore Medical School about experiences of shame during medical training.
8 storytellers from each institution will be awarded a $100 USD (or equivalent) Amazon giftcard, and one storyteller from each participating institution will be paired with a professional artist to illustrate their story into a graphic narrative artform to be submitted for publication. Submissions are due by Nov. 28th.
Winners will be notified mid-December 2022. In Spring 2023, we will host an international StorySharing Event during which stories will be shared (anonymously if desired).
EVENT DETAILS
We are inviting mixed-media submissions in response to the following prompt:
Share a story about a time when you experienced shame (i.e., feeling globally flawed, deficient, and/or unworthy)
during your medical education.
Stories may be told using written narratives, poetry, illustration/graphic art, photography, recorded audio, sculpture, or the creative medium of your choice. Strong submissions will center on a specific story, will provide insights into the emotional experience of shame, and will utilize effective storytelling techniques.
The graphic medicine and gift card awardees will be chosen based on the creativity, originality, and impact of their submissions.
